Care este diferenta dintre auction si tender? (una din greselile tipice intr-un document de engleza de afaceri, pentru ca in limba romana sunt similare).

Auction =a usually public sale of goods or property, where people make higher and higher bids (= offers of money) for each thing, until the thing is sold to the person who will pay most.

Tender (offer) = a written or formal offer to supply goods or do a job for an agreed price. Daca vreti sa participati la o licitatie pentru un contract, cuvantul corect este tender.

The stock market/ engleza de afaceri

As I mentioned before, the stock market and investing in the stock market is one of the topics for my business English courses.
In one of my previous articles upon the same topic, I have introduced some general ideas.
As an investor, the moment I am interested into a company's shares, I usually take some aspects into account. First, the financial information, such as the evolution of the profit and the profit-loss account. (A presentation upon the fundamental analysis of shares will be published soon).

Provided these look fine, I move on to the next step, meaning checking the evolution of the value of the shares in a graph. "Reading" the graph is very important and challenging. If there are many ups and downs, maybe the decision to invest is not just the right one. If the graph is ascending for a period of time, it is a good sign, because the value of the shares is increasing, but, be aware, after a period of increase, the value can reach a peak, from which it starts descending. Nobody can see this coming, mainly because the stock markets are "perfect", so they incorporate all the information, meaning whenever there is a rumor concerning the evolution of a certain company, the investors are selling or buying, which settles the things differently from the point of view of demand and offer.

Cursuri engleza de afaceri

The first courses for the advanced business English classes relate to Corporate Culture. As I have written previously in my articles about the syllabuses for legal English, for this type of English courses, introducing, understanding and using the new vocabulary in context is of utmost importance.

The people who know me and my "method" are aware of the fact that I reject memorizing. Basically I hate learning by heart due to the fact that I have had to "perform" this on various occasions during my years of study and I still fail to see the results. So I always appreciate from my students (and not only) the ability to make use of their imagination and also to use the new vocabulary in contexts that they themselves create.
For example try  to use these phrases in context: "sink or swim", "red tape", "bonus", "perk", "incentive", "bill of exchange", "yardstick", "streamlining".

OK, I admit, it is very easy to google them, but in most cases what you get is not all the time reliable.

In one of my previous articles I have started the topic of companies and company formation. I would like to enlarge a little.

A company is formed upon the issuance of a certificate of incorporation by the appropriate governmental authority. A certificate of incorporation is issued upon the filing of the constitutional documents of the company, together with the statutory forms (forms required by law) and the payment of a filing fee. The ‘constitution’ of a company consists of two documents. One, the memorandum of association, states the objects of a company and the details of its authorized capital, otherwise known as the nominal capital. The second document, the articles of association (bylaws), contains provisions for the internal management of the company, for example, shareholders’ annual general meetings, or AGMs, and the extraordinary general meetings, the board of directors, corporate contracts and loans.

Engleza de afaceri/ English for interviews

At the request of my students, I include in the syllabus for my business English courses topics related to interviews. I have also developed this in previous articles HERE and HERE.

As I have mentioned before, during the interview-related courses I stage activities dedicated to this topic. I ask some students to prepare questions as if they are the interviewers, and other students prepare questions as if they are the applicants. Both sets of questions are equally important. I advise my students who are the interviewers to think of tricky questions, such as “Have you ever been fired? “ and my students who are the applicants to think of questions that being asked will show preoccupation towards the culture of the company.

A tip for my students is to try to use as much of Present Perfect Tense as they can. For an expert user, this is a clear sign of proficiency.

Engleza de afaceri/English for interviews

At the request of my students, I include in the syllabus for my business English courses topics related to interviews. I have also developed this in a previous article HERE.

The most common activity during the business English courses is to test the students’ abilities by staging mock-up interviews. This is usually done through role-play, some students are the applicant(s) and some students the interviewer(s). The focus of this activity is to prepare and ask pertinent questions as related to both parties involved. Also, proving the necessary fluency is of utmost importance.

I keep telling my students that an interviewer can easily find out of their real level of English or business English merely by asking one single question. Such as: "What do you do?".

Engleza de afaceri/engleza juridica

During the first courses of business English we look into companies and company formation, also from the point of view of legal English, or company law.

A company is a business association which has the character of a legal person, distinct from its officers and shareholders. This is significant because it insulates the owners against personal liability. However, in some instances, for example when the company is used to perpetrate fraud or acts ultra vires (unauthorised, beyond a person’s legal power), the court may lift the corporate veil (separation between the corporation and its shareholders such that the shareholders will not be held personally liable for corporate debts) and subject the shareholders to personal liability.

I will develop these further with issues concerning company formation.
