Paper 5 SPEAKING

There are two examiners. One (the interlocutor) conducts the test, providing you with the necessary materials and explaining you what you have to do. The other examiner (the assessor) is introduced to you, but then takes no further part in the interaction.

Part 1 (3 minutes)
The interlocutor first asks you and your partner a few questions. The interlocutor asks candidates for some information about themselves, then widens the scope of the questions by asking about, e.g. candidates’ leisure activities, studies, travel and daily life. Candidates are expected to respond to the interlocutor’s questions, and listen to what their partner has to say.

Part 2 (a one-minute ’long turn’ for each candidate, plus 30-second response from the second candidate)

You are each given the opportunity to talk for about a minute, and to comment briefly after your partner has spoken.

The interlocutor gives you a set of pictures and asks you to talk about them for about one minute. It is important to listen carefully to the interlocutor’s instructions. The interlocutor then asks your partner a question about your pictures and your partner responds briefly.

You are then given another set of pictures to look at. Your partner talks about these pictures for about one minute. This time the interlocutor asks you a question about your partner’s pictures and you respond briefly.

Part 3 (approximately 4 minutes)

In this part of the test you and your partner are asked to talk together. The interlocutor places a new set of pictures on the table between you. This stimulus provides the basis for a discussion. The interlocutor explains what you have to do.

Part 4 (approximately 4 minutes)

The interlocutor asks some further questions, which leads to a more general discussion of what you have talked about in Part 3. You may comment on your partner’s answers if you wish.

Cursuri engleza de afaceri

The first courses for the advanced business English classes relate to Corporate Culture. As I have written previously in my articles about the syllabuses for legal English, for this type of English courses, introducing, understanding and using the new vocabulary in context is of utmost importance.

The people who know me and my "method" are aware of the fact that I reject memorizing. Basically I hate learning by heart due to the fact that I have had to "perform" this on various occasions during my years of study and I still fail to see the results. So I always appreciate from my students (and not only) the ability to make use of their imagination and also to use the new vocabulary in contexts that they themselves create.
For example try  to use these phrases in context: "sink or swim", "red tape", "bonus", "perk", "incentive", "bill of exchange", "yardstick", "streamlining".

OK, I admit, it is very easy to google them, but in most cases what you get is not all the time reliable.
To be continued.

Cursuri engleza de afaceri/Talk business

START ENGLISH. Watch, listen, speak. Tips and tricks about English. (www.engleza-de-afaceri.ro)

During the first courses of business English we look into companies and company formation, also from the point of view of legal English, or company law.

A company is a business association which has the character of a legal person, distinct from its officers and shareholders. This is significant because it insulates the owners against personal liability. However, in some instances, for example when the company is used to perpetrate fraud or acts ultra vires (unauthorised, beyond a person’s legal power), the court may lift the corporate veil (separation between the corporation and its shareholders such that the shareholders will not be held personally liable for corporate debts) and subject the shareholders to personal liability.

I will develop these further with issues concerning company formation.

Invata engleza/ The Cambridge FCE test

START ENGLISH. Watch, listen, speak. Tips and tricks about English.

Presently I will offer some information about the Reading paper for the First Certificate in English exam. In my article Sample Test for the FCE Exam I have introduced tasks for the Use of English test, the Writing test and the Speaking test.

For completing the Reading Paper the time frame is an hour. The task consists of three parts.

The Reading Paper part 1 consists of a multiple choice test. So, there will be a rather long text, which you will have to read carefully and try to circle the right choice. Technically speaking this is an easier task compared with the Listening and (maybe) the Speaking papers, but you need a lot of attention for details. Many students make mistakes about this because they do not mind the details.

Firstly read the questions (they are usually 8). Frequently the gist of the task is in the question. And this applies to all tasks. You cannot do right if you do not know/understand what you are supposed to do. It is very simple in theory, but in practice students sometimes do not really pay attention and lose valuable points.

Read also the alternatives and if you decide to circle something, find reasons in the text to do so. And this is the difficult part about this text because the alternatives are often confusing and you might think that more than one is appropriate. Students seldom find two alternatives that can match the context. How to choose between them?
Scan the fragment which the task is about and find tips in the text in favor of your choice. Chose the alternative for which there are more reasons.

I could not help but noticing another type of mistake; imaginative students circle the wrong answer because they think it is a possible continuation of the fragment/text. So, do not forget, you circle something because of hard evidence in the text and not because you feel it might be alright.

As a conclusion, I need to remind you to pay attention to the time for this paper: you must complete all 3 parts of the Reading Paper in an hour, so time management is of utmost importance!

Invata engleza/Cursuri de engleza juridica

START ENGLISH. Watch, listen, speak. Tips and tricks about English.

I have received many requests for legal English courses, as well as many questions about the development and the syllabuses for these courses, so I would like to present some facts.

Firstly, in order to attend these courses, your level of knowledge should be at least B1, meaning pre-intermediate. If your level is pre-intermediate, you should apply for the first type of legal English courses and the textbook is Introduction to International Legal English.
If your level is C1, meaning advanced, your textbook will be International Legal English , which is also suitable for the preparation for the International Legal English Certificate (ILEC).

If you are not sure about your level your knowledge, we offer preliminary tests, which are for free. The tests can take place at your office, if you are a legal person, or at our office, if you are an individual person. We also organize on-line courses and testing through Skype.

About the development and structure of the courses, I should mention that one of the most difficult aspect related to the legal English courses is the new vocabulary. We all the time present the new vocabulary in context and we explain the new words through examples and case studies. For example I have introduced in my previous paragraph two items, legal person and individual person. I do trust you have understood them.
I will come up with more details about the International Legal English Certificate and the development of my courses.
