Scopul TOEFL este de a evalua cunoasterea limbii engleze de catre persoanele a caror limba materna este alta decat engleza. Mai mult de 4,500 de institutii, agentii si organizatii din peste 80 de tari folosesc rezultatele TOEFL. Testul este administrat de către Serviciul pentru Testari Educationale (ETS).

Sample test for the Internet-Based TOEFL

START ENGLISH. Watch, listen, speak. Tips and tricks about English.

This test includes sample tasks for the TOEFL Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT). The skills for the Internet-Based TOEFL are READING, LISTENING, SPEAKING and WRITING.

The sample test will be dedicated to the Speaking and the Writing Sections.


SPEAKING SECTION

The Speaking section tests your ability to communicate in English in an academic setting. During the test, you will be presented with six speaking questions. The questions ask for a response to a single question, a conversation, a talk or a lecture.

Question

1. Describe an ideal marriage partner. What qualities do you think are most important for a husband or wife? Use specific reasons and details to explain your choices.

Preparation Time: 15 seconds

Recording Time: 45 seconds


2. Some people like to watch the news on television. Other people prefer to read the news in a newspaper. Still others use their computers to get the news. How do you prefer to be informed about the news and why? Use specific reasons and examples to support your choice.

3. Independent Speaking Question 1 “A Birthday’’

Listen to a question about a familiar topic.

Question

Explain how birthdays are celebrated in your country. Use specific examples and details in your explanation.

4. Independent Speaking Question 2 “Course Requirements”

Listen to a question that asks your opinion about a familiar topic.

Question

Some students would rather write a paper than take a test. Other students would rather take a test instead of writing a paper. Which option do you prefer and why? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

Preparation Time: 15 seconds

Recording Time: 45 seconds


WRITING SECTION

The writing section tests your ability to write essays in English similar to those that you would write in college courses.

There will be 2 essays during the test. The sample test for the TOEFL iBT is dedicated to the second essay or the independent essay. You will have 30 minutes to plan, write and revise your response. Typically, a good essay for the independent topic will require that you write 300-350 words.

Some people, due to some requirements coming from their employers or authorities from countries they intend to migrate, have to sit in the TOEFL examination.

The exam is also based upon the reading, speaking, writing and listening skills. Major requirements: good knowledge of grammar and fluency.

A few tips:

The reading test is based upon some kind of long texts (7oo words or so), whose topics are rather unusual and not very common. Be relaxed, you are not supposed to know anything about the topics of the texts, but read the text attentively and carefully do the tasks. These are sometimes based on details. You should also be careful about the timing, which leads to the most important aspect of the TOEFL examination, the time frame.

For all the tasks you have to perform, you need to respect the timing and this is especially difficult for the speaking test. For this task, you will either read or listen to some sentences or a text. Sometimes you have to do both and the task is based on both of them. The topics are easy, based upon everyday life situations. After you listen or read the task, you have 30-60 seconds to prepare and then 45-60 seconds to speak. It is rather tight because you have to think fast and you do not have time for taking notes. So structure your response in your mind and do not stop talking until the time is up.

I admit I notice during the preparation courses that the speaking test was the trickiest.

More on the TOEFL examination

This article is dedicated to the listening task.

For the listening task, no matter if you have the Paper Based TOEFL (PBT), the Computer Based TOEFL (CBT) or the Internet Based TOEFL (iBT), you will have a title and a picture to introduce you to the topic. Then you have to listen to a rather long dialogue or text and after that you do the tasks. The tasks are usually multiple choice (grilă, as we say in Romanian) and based upon details and not general ideas from the listening text.

A few tips:

While listening, take notes because you cannot remember all the details when performing the tasks. Also you will not have time to write everything, but in order to do so, write in short(summarize)  so that you can cover the most important details.

If you do not know  how  to respond to a task, do not leave it that way, but circle or choose an answer (any answer) and all the time be aware of the timing. If you are a little bit behind schedule, do not panic and try to concentrate on the exam. More about this exam you can find here.
