Totul despre IELTS

START ENGLISH. Watch, listen, speak. Tips and tricks about English.

Examenul IELTS (International English Language Testing System) este cel mai cunoscut test de limba engleza din lume.
Testul IELTS va ajuta sa folositi limba engleza intr-o tara straina in orice context si folosing toate abilitatile: reading, listening, speaking and writing.
Daca sustineti un test IELTS, puteti sa studiati, sa lucrati si sa locuiti aproape oriunde in lume, sau va ajuta sa promovati sau sa aplicati pentru un post mai bine platit.

Testul IELTS consta in patru probe :
Listening: 40 minute (aprox.)
Academic Reading sau General Training Reading: 60 minute
Academic Writing sau General Training Writing: 60 minute
Speaking: 11 – 14 minute (aprox.)
Durată Test: 2 ore 44 minute.

The focus of this article will be on the speaking task. The topics for this task are based upon everyday life situations, but some tasks can be very unbecoming for many students. What I am trying to say is that some of the topics may not be so familiar to all the contestants, mainly because they are not all the time part of their daily routine or environment. For example, it can sometimes be difficult for a business man to develop a subject based upon a cooking routine.

A few tips:
Once you get your subject, try to brainstorm some vocabulary about it then think of some ideas on the topic that you can develop in conversation. Write down a few questions that you can ask your partner of conversation. One final tip: never stop talking, your goal for this task being to show your fluency on any topic. The topics for the speaking test are developed extensively during the preparation modules.

Invata engleza/ The Cambridge FCE test

START ENGLISH. Watch, listen, speak. Tips and tricks about English.

Presently I will offer some information about the Reading paper for the First Certificate in English exam. In my article Sample Test for the FCE Exam I have introduced tasks for the Use of English test, the Writing test and the Speaking test.

For completing the Reading Paper the time frame is an hour. The task consists of three parts.

The Reading Paper part 1 consists of a multiple choice test. So, there will be a rather long text, which you will have to read carefully and try to circle the right choice. Technically speaking this is an easier task compared with the Listening and (maybe) the Speaking papers, but you need a lot of attention for details. Many students make mistakes about this because they do not mind the details.

Firstly read the questions (they are usually 8). Frequently the gist of the task is in the question. And this applies to all tasks. You cannot do right if you do not know/understand what you are supposed to do. It is very simple in theory, but in practice students sometimes do not really pay attention and lose valuable points.

Read also the alternatives and if you decide to circle something, find reasons in the text to do so. And this is the difficult part about this text because the alternatives are often confusing and you might think that more than one is appropriate. Students seldom find two alternatives that can match the context. How to choose between them?
Scan the fragment which the task is about and find tips in the text in favor of your choice. Chose the alternative for which there are more reasons.

I could not help but noticing another type of mistake; imaginative students circle the wrong answer because they think it is a possible continuation of the fragment/text. So, do not forget, you circle something because of hard evidence in the text and not because you feel it might be alright.

As a conclusion, I need to remind you to pay attention to the time for this paper: you must complete all 3 parts of the Reading Paper in an hour, so time management is of utmost importance!

About the IELTS examination (2)

START ENGLISH. Watch, listen, speak. Tips and tricks about English.

Examenul IELTS (International English Language Testing System) este cel mai cunoscut test de limba engleza din lume.

Testul IELTS va ajuta sa folositi limba engleza intr-o tara straina in orice context si folosing toate abilitatile: reading, listening, speaking and writing.

Daca sustineti un test IELTS, puteti sa studiati, sa lucrati si sa locuiti aproape oriunde in lume, sau va ajuta sa promovati sau sa aplicati pentru un post mai bine platit care implica interactiune in limba engleza cu parteneri si clienti straini.

I have introduced useful information about the IELTS exam in my article here and I will enlarge upon it further.

In this article I will like to give a few tips about the writing paper.

The writing paper consists of two tasks and the time frame is 60 minutes for both. The first task is based on data which is presented as a graph or a bar chart, or a diagram of a process, machine or device. It is advisable to spend only 20 minutes for this task, otherwise you will not be able to finish the second task in due time. The second task is obviously longer and worth twice as many marks as compared with the first one.

Getting back to our sheep, the first task for the writing paper entails reading and summarizing data from a graph or some kind of diagram, activity which is slightly unfamiliar for many of you.

First and foremost read the task attentively and then try to "decipher" the graph. They are usually simple to read, the difficult part of this is what to write about. Summarize all the relevant information, paying attention especially to the data that caused or showed a certain evolution or change in the graph.

Before starting writing, make a plan in which to include an opening statement, the most important information and some comparisons which include the most relevant data. When writing, remember you have to write at least 150 words. More about my courses for the IELTS you can find here.

Invata engleza/ The TOEFL exam

Some people, due to some requirements coming from their employers or authorities from countries they intend to migrate, have to sit in the TOEFL examination.
The exam is also based upon the reading, speaking, writing and listening skills. Major requirements: good knowledge of grammar and fluency.
A few tips:
The reading test is based upon some kind of long texts (7oo words or so), whose topics are rather unusual and not very common. Be relaxed, you are not supposed to know anything about the topics of the texts, but read the text attentively and carefully do the tasks. These are sometimes based on details. You should also be careful about the timing, which leads to the most important aspect of the TOEFL examination, the time frame.
For all the tasks you have to perform, you need to respect the timing and this is especially difficult for the speaking test. For this task, you will either read or listen to some sentences or a text. Sometimes you have to do both and the task is based on both of them. The topics are easy, based upon everyday life situations. After you listen or read the task, you have 30-60 seconds to prepare and then 45-60 seconds to speak. It is rather tight because you have to think fast and you do not have time for taking notes. So structure your response in your mind and do not stop talking until the time is up.
I admit I notice during the preparation courses that the speaking test was the trickiest.

Invata engleza/The IELTS test (5)

In my previous article here I have given some useful tips (I hope) about the Listening paper for the IELTS test.

Presently I have to develop some facts about the Listening paper Section 3.

For the IELTS Listening Section 3 you will listen to a dialogue between two to four speakers and the topic can relate to an aspect of academic life. There are 10 questions and up to three tasks to do. The tasks can be a flow-chart, multiple choice or labeling a diagram. The flow-chart completion requires following a discussion and filling in some given options according to what the candidate hears. It is easier in practice than in theory. Diagram labeling consists of transferring the information you hear onto a simple picture or a plan. While listening you need to focus on details concerning the location of things in that particular picture. For both these tasks there are more items than you need to fill. Also I think you are familiar with what multiple choice tasks entail.

A few more tips: for all tasks concerning listening activities, read beforehand the information given because while listening to the dialogues, you need to know what to listen for. Focus on the tasks and always listen carefully because you will hear the recording only once.
