What I have noticed when teaching the ordinal numbers is that students do not all the time understand their usefulness.

Remember! You use them when talking about days in the calendar.


What date is it today?

The 13th of November. You do not say 13 November. Nevertheless, you can write like this.

Despre mine

Succesul este un leitmotif modern sau un mit urban.

Ca persoana juridica sau companie, succesul inseamnă sa ai clienti. După cum am mai scris, misiunea unei companii, inainte de orice declaratie de misiune, este sa gaseasca clienti. Sa ii pastreze si sa creeze valoare prin serviciile sau produsele pe care le ofera. Dar nimeni nu poate multumi absolut pe toată lumea, iar unii clienti pot deveni toxici.


Experienta m-a invatat sa nu lucrez cu persoane care vor mai mult decat pot eu sa le ofer sau care nu stiu de fapt ce vor si schimba regulile pe parcurs. In acest caz, le recomand o companie concurenta. Ma vor aprecia mai mult pentru ca m-am retras, decat daca voi continua sa incerc sa-i conving de utilitatea serviciilor mele comparativ cu orice altă oferta.


Cat despre mine. Sunt o persoană de succes? Pentru ca traim si judecam prin comparatie, unii ma pot considera de succes iar altii, nu. Nu pot intra intr-un tipar de succes material pentru ca “these shoes are too large to fill”. Si inca mai cred ca orice declaratie de misiune are valoare daca urmareste in primul rand utilitatea pentru clienti si apoi castigul material. Intrebarea pe care mi-o pun, ca furnizor de servicii de limbi straine, este de ce ar vrea cineva sa achite taxa de curs?

Sau cum programele si cursurile noastre va pot ajuta sa aveti success.

La serviciu, la un nou serviciu, la un interviu, la un examen, intr-o tara straina…


Eu ma consider de succes pentru ca am ajutat multe persoane sa vorbeasca in engleza. Sa exprime orice idei in limba engleza. Corect.

Unele dintre aceste persoane inca ma mai cauta si imi multumesc. Sau imi trimit o cerere de oferta.


Va multumesc pentru ca ma cititi.

Cuvinte in engleza

Cu aceasta ocazie, inaugurez alta rubrica; Cuvinte in engleza. Voi explica in limba engleza cuvinte pe care le consider dificile de inteles si implicit, de tradus. Totusi nu voi traduce prea mult in limba romana deoarece stiti ca nu apreciez o astfel de metoda de invatare a limbii engleze. De aceea va si incurajez sa folositi un dictionar englez-englez.


Engleza pentru toţi

Am gasit pe forumul de pe ro.bab.la, intrebarea: "Cum se traduce scorches?"

To scorch = To affect painfully with heat, or as with heat; to be slightly burned by heat.

Din punct de vedere meteorologic, spunem "It is a real scorcher today" ( It is a very hot day).


Macar prin cuvinte, in engleza, sa ne mai bucuram de vara, now that fall is upon us.

Totul despre examenul CAE
The tasks for the Cambridge exam CAE are structured as following:

Paper 1 Reading

Paper 2 Writing

Paper 3 Use of English

Paper 4 Listening

Paper 5 Speaking.

This test includes tasks for the Writing, the Use of English and the Speaking Papers. The complete tests will be performed in class. You are welcome to join a group for the preparation for the CAE exam.

Paper 2 WRITING
Choose one of the following writing tasks. Your answer should follow exactly the instructions given. Write approximately 220-260 words.

1.A technology magazine, International Technology Today, has asked its readers to submit articles on the impact of mobile phones on modern society. In your article, you should discuss the different personal and business uses of mobile phones and assess the advantages and disadvantages of this technology.

Write your article.

2.Your town is hoping to host a sport event next year, which will attract competitors from other countries. The organizers of this sports event need to ensure that the chosen venue has an adequate range of facilities for visitors. Write a proposal to the organizing committee to persuade them that your town is a suitable venue. Your proposal should include information on accommodation, transport and entertainment.

Write your proposal.

3.You have been asked to write an information sheet giving advice to students from abroad about how to get the most out of studying in your college. The title is Studying and Student Life and the information sheet must include advice relating to:

-methods of study

-suitable types of accommodation

-social life

Paper 5 SPEAKING


There are two examiners. One (the interlocutor) conducts the test, providing you with the necessary materials and explaining you what you have to do. The other examiner (the assessor) is introduced to you, but then takes no further part in the interaction.


Part 1 (3 minutes)
The interlocutor first asks you and your partner a few questions. The interlocutor asks candidates for some information about themselves, then widens the scope of the questions by asking about, e.g. candidates’ leisure activities, studies, travel and daily life. Candidates are expected to respond to the interlocutor’s questions, and listen to what their partner has to say.


Part 2 (a one-minute ’long turn’ for each candidate, plus 30-second response from the second candidate)


You are each given the opportunity to talk for about a minute, and to comment briefly after your partner has spoken.

The interlocutor gives you a set of pictures and asks you to talk about them for about one minute. It is important to listen carefully to the interlocutor’s instructions. The interlocutor then asks your partner a question about your pictures and your partner responds briefly.


You are then given another set of pictures to look at. Your partner talks about these pictures for about one minute. This time the interlocutor asks you a question about your partner’s pictures and you respond briefly.


Part 3 (approximately 4 minutes)

In this part of the test you and your partner are asked to talk together. The interlocutor places a new set of pictures on the table between you. This stimulus provides the basis for a discussion. The interlocutor explains what you have to do.


Part 4 (approximately 4 minutes)

The interlocutor asks some further questions, which leads to a more general discussion of what you have talked about in Part 3. You may comment on your partner’s answers if you wish.

These English courses are based upon dialogues about everyday life situations with focus on questions. The topics are very simple first but in time, they become more complex. I also teach my students how to ask questions because they sometimes make mistakes, due to the fact that in our language we do not have rules for questions.

Questions are very important because in any situation, you will manage through asking questions. Also, questions are a key point in every conversation.

Another issue to be discussed refers to being polite in English, another situation totally different from our language. In Romanian we have the politeness pronouns, in English we have to make do (manage) with “could” or “would”.

So whenever you need something you say: “Could you help me?” or “Could I have …?” and whenever you offer something you say: “Would you like …?”.
Never ever say: "I want" or "Do you want?"..

There are also some grammar themes but presented mainly in practice, meaning in conversation.

Cum predau articolul hotarat THE in engleza ?

Prin comparatie cu articolul nehotarat A/An..Nimic mai simplu…Cum spunea Mark Twain: Sa te lasi de fumat?..Nimic mai simplu..Si eu m-am lasat de vreo 100 de ori..:)…Si eu am predat articolul hotarat de vreo mie (1000) de ori…M-au inteles?..Sau au inteles cand/cum se foloseste intr-un mesaj vorbit/scris?..

Cand trebuie sa explic ceva ma adresez de obicei mediului/background-ului clientilor..Din fericire majoritatea au un background tehnic, ceea ce faciliteaza anumite asocieri. Cum ar fi, cu referire la subiectul acestui articol, asocirea cu ideea de multime (de la matematica, nu crowd). Deci avem o multime de concepte, idei, obiecte, care in multimea respectiva sunt determinate de articolul nehotarat A/An..Daca extrag un concept, obiect din multime, determinantul lui va fi articolul hotarat.


Ex: There is a man, a car, a tree in the street. The car is a Porsche.

Desigur, mai sunt si alte reguli..Dar aceasta asociere este cea mai simpla.

The stock market/ engleza de afaceri

As I mentioned before, the stock market and investing in the stock market is one of the topics for my business English courses.
In one of my previous articles upon the same topic, I have introduced some general ideas.
As an investor, the moment I am interested into a company's shares, I usually take some aspects into account. First, the financial information, such as the evolution of the profit and the profit-loss account. (A presentation upon the fundamental analysis of shares will be published soon).

Provided these look fine, I move on to the next step, meaning checking the evolution of the value of the shares in a graph. "Reading" the graph is very important and challenging. If there are many ups and downs, maybe the decision to invest is not just the right one. If the graph is ascending for a period of time, it is a good sign, because the value of the shares is increasing, but, be aware, after a period of increase, the value can reach a peak, from which it starts descending. Nobody can see this coming, mainly because the stock markets are "perfect", so they incorporate all the information, meaning whenever there is a rumor concerning the evolution of a certain company, the investors are selling or buying, which settles the things differently from the point of view of demand and offer.

The first courses for the advanced business English classes relate to Corporate Culture. As I have written previously in my articles about the syllabuses for legal English, for this type of English courses, introducing, understanding and using the new vocabulary in context is of utmost importance.

The people who know me and my "method" are aware of the fact that I reject memorizing. Basically I hate learning by heart due to the fact that I have had to "perform" this on various occasions during my years of study and I still fail to see the results. So I always appreciate from my students (and not only) the ability to make use of their imagination and also to use the new vocabulary in contexts that they themselves create.
For example try  to use these phrases in context: "sink or swim", "red tape", "bonus", "perk", "incentive", "bill of exchange", "yardstick", "streamlining".

OK, I admit, it is very easy to google them, but in most cases what you get is not all the time reliable.

Engleza juridica/ Legal English

 
Taking into account the fact that we receive many requests for legal English courses, I would like to enlarge upon the methodology of these courses. 
During the first legal English classes, new vocabulary is being introduced. 

These concepts pertain to the legal system, such as: the bodies of law (civil law, common law, criminal law), types of laws, types of courts, persons in court (defendant, clerk, claimant/plaintiff, advocate….), documents in court (affidavit, brief, complaint, motion…).

The new vocabulary is introduced in context and in communicative and interactive activities. I have mentioned in a previous article that the focus of the legal English courses is the new vocabulary which is first brainstormed and then practiced.
