Despre mine

Succesul este un leitmotif modern sau un mit urban.

Ca persoana juridica sau companie, succesul inseamnă sa ai clienti. După cum am mai scris, misiunea unei companii, inainte de orice declaratie de misiune, este sa gaseasca clienti. Sa ii pastreze si sa creeze valoare prin serviciile sau produsele pe care le ofera. Dar nimeni nu poate multumi absolut pe toată lumea, iar unii clienti pot deveni toxici.


Experienta m-a invatat sa nu lucrez cu persoane care vor mai mult decat pot eu sa le ofer sau care nu stiu de fapt ce vor si schimba regulile pe parcurs. In acest caz, le recomand o companie concurenta. Ma vor aprecia mai mult pentru ca m-am retras, decat daca voi continua sa incerc sa-i conving de utilitatea serviciilor mele comparativ cu orice altă oferta.


Cat despre mine. Sunt o persoană de succes? Pentru ca traim si judecam prin comparatie, unii ma pot considera de succes iar altii, nu. Nu pot intra intr-un tipar de succes material pentru ca “these shoes are too large to fill”. Si inca mai cred ca orice declaratie de misiune are valoare daca urmareste in primul rand utilitatea pentru clienti si apoi castigul material. Intrebarea pe care mi-o pun, ca furnizor de servicii de limbi straine, este de ce ar vrea cineva sa achite taxa de curs?

Sau cum programele si cursurile noastre va pot ajuta sa aveti success.

La serviciu, la un nou serviciu, la un interviu, la un examen, intr-o tara straina…


Eu ma consider de succes pentru ca am ajutat multe persoane sa vorbeasca in engleza. Sa exprime orice idei in limba engleza. Corect.

Unele dintre aceste persoane inca ma mai cauta si imi multumesc. Sau imi trimit o cerere de oferta.

Cuvinte in engleza

Cu aceasta ocazie, inaugurez alta rubrica; Cuvinte in engleza. Voi explica in limba engleza cuvinte pe care le consider dificile de inteles si implicit, de tradus. Totusi nu voi traduce prea mult in limba romana deoarece stiti ca nu apreciez o astfel de metoda de invatare a limbii engleze. De aceea va si incurajez sa folositi un dictionar englez-englez.


Engleza pentru toţi

Am gasit pe forumul de pe ro.bab.la, intrebarea: "Cum se traduce scorches?"

To scorch = To affect painfully with heat, or as with heat; to be slightly burned by heat.

Din punct de vedere meteorologic, spunem "It is a real scorcher today" ( It is a very hot day).


Macar prin cuvinte, in engleza, sa ne mai bucuram de vara, now that fall is upon us.

A doua greseala a lunii august

Nu prea am scris despre substantive si implicit despre pluralele neregulate. Care mai produc greseli. Cum ar fi sa folosim persons ca plural pentru person.

Din punct de vedere al englezei britanice, nu este corect. Pluralul lui person este people.

Many Happy Returns of the Day, Adam Smith!

Who on earth is Adam Smith? He was an economist and he wrote, by far, the best book about economics, The Wealth of  Nations. A simple but focused book about the mechanisms and interrelations between money/wealth and people.

Incidentally we share the same birthday, just incidentally :).

I read economics books for the same pleasure that fairy tales give me..They are both realistic.

Fairy tales because the stories are the same with everyday life, you make a mistake, you pay and have to travel all over kingdoms to find the lost love of the prince (aren't we all trying to find our love?)...or the prince gives a piece of his calf (part of the leg) as payment for the Ogre (Witch, Bird) to be crossed over to the other realm..we sacrifice a lot for our desires and we deeply yearn for the other "realm"and..... the simplest metaphor of love, if you kiss a frog it becomes a prince, your prince.

In economics there is a magic place where the Offer meets the Demand  which gives the price of it. "There is a price for everything".

Adam Smith spoke of the Invisible Hand, metaphor or not, that is self regulation of the markets, without the intervention of the (sur)realistic State.

Utopian, but 90% realistic because we must admit we are but at a far cry (far away) from the first Utopia ever mention in fiction, the island of the Phaeacians (Ulysses).

Ati primit un email in limba engleza de la un client. Trebuie sa raspundeti ASAP (as soon as possible).

Cum incepeti sa scrieti email-ul?

Cum credeti ca este corect:

“I received your email” or “I have received your email” ?

…”Dear Sir/Madam,

I have received you email and…..”


De ce am folosit timpul Present Perfect Simple si nu Past Tense Simple? Pentru ca timpul Present Perfect este un timp prezent, dupa cum ii arata si denumirea, iar o conversatie pe email (sau la telefon) implica o situatie de actualitate si nu un eveniment care s-a intamplat in trecut.

Atentie! Aceste 2 timpuri verbale sunt folosite uneori in mod incorect in limba engleza deoarece traducerea lor in limba romana este similara, adica un timp trecut.

Examenul IELTS (International English Language Testing System) este cel mai cunoscut test de limba engleza din lume.

Testul IELTS va ajuta sa folositi limba engleza intr-o tara straina in orice context si folosing toate abilitatile: reading, listening, speaking and writing. 

Daca sustineti un test IELTS, puteti sa studiati, sa lucrati si sa locuiti aproape oriunde in lume, sau va ajuta sa promovati sau sa aplicati pentru un post mai bine platit.

Testul IELTS consta in patru probe :
Listening: 40 minute (aprox.)
Academic Reading sau General Training Reading: 60 minute
Academic Writing sau General Training Writing: 60 minute
Speaking: 11 – 14 minute (aprox.)
Durată Test: 2 ore 44 minute.

The focus of this article will be on the speaking task. The topics for this task are based upon everyday life situations, but some tasks can be very unbecoming for many students. What I am trying to say is that some of the topics may not be so familiar to all the contestants, mainly because they are not all the time part of their daily routine or environment. For example, it can sometimes be difficult for a business man to develop a subject based upon a cooking routine.

A few tips:
Once you get your subject, try to brainstorm some vocabulary about it then think of some ideas on the topic that you can develop in conversation. Write down a few questions that you can ask your partner of conversation. One final tip: never stop talking, your goal for this task being to show your fluency on any topic. The topics for the speaking test are developed extensively during the preparation modules.

These English courses are based upon dialogues about everyday life situations with focus on questions. The topics are very simple first but in time, they become more complex. I also teach my students how to ask questions because they sometimes make mistakes, due to the fact that in our language we do not have rules for questions.

Questions are very important because in any situation, you will manage through asking questions. Also, questions are a key point in every conversation.

Another issue to be discussed refers to being polite in English, another situation totally different from our language. In Romanian we have the politeness pronouns, in English we have to make do (manage) with “could” or “would”.

So whenever you need something you say: “Could you help me?” or “Could I have …?” and whenever you offer something you say: “Would you like …?”.
Never ever say: "I want" or "Do you want?"..

There are also some grammar themes but presented mainly in practice, meaning in conversation.

News

Due to that fact that I have received a lot of requests from my Romanian students and readers to also write my articles in Romanian, I will consequently do so.

But, mind you, the article in Romanian will be a summary of the article in English. I will not translate my article in English into Romanian because I do not want to free the monster of trying to learn a language through another one; in our case to learn English through Romanian.

Of course, there are many methodology approaches that can confirm this method. But after careful observation during my seventeen years of practice, I have decided that this approach is not the best one from the point of view of long term results.

I base my courses on communication, which can become very difficult when the students allocate time first to translate the sentences they have heard into Romanian, after that to think about a possible answer in Romanian and then to translate it into English. It is a very long and complicated process which makes conversation awkward or nonexistent.

In order that my method would be clearer, I am going to present in future articles the activities that I develop during all my courses.

Tips for translating

As I promised, I would like to add a few more tips and this time for students who need to do some translations from time to time.

Through my article, I do not advice professionals but students, people who lack experience, vocabulary or other points concerning the English grammar. Many students of mine have told me about the various tasks that they have to perform and they sometimes include translating documents from Romanian into English or the other way around.

The first tip would be to try and hide all your shortcomings concerning the use of English. But this is easier said than done.

Everybody complains about the difficulties of translating a text from our mother tongue into English. And I do not refer only to Romanian speakers, but to all. For these kinds of translations, the focus is not on our mother tongue but on the English language.

When taking into account these kinds of translations, you should bear in mind that you must not translate the text word for word. Instead of this, try to analyze the text and try to rephrase it in a simpler one. Of course, you can use The Google Translate, but it also translates the texts word for word and if you do not know  the language, you can miss some grammar mistakes and you also have to rearrange the text according to the rules of word order in English. It is better to try and translate an idea, a simple one, than to translate the words in a sentence. All the time when you phrase a sentence, use the word order in English and never forget the subject of the sentence. This is a point that generates a lot of mistakes for many speakers all over the world due to the fact that in many languages, the presence of a subject in a sentence is not all the time compulsory. So, do not forget to have a subject in all the sentences that you make and then use a tense, but think carefully about it and pay attention to the concord between the subject and the verb. Use the tenses according to the rules of the English language and not according to the tenses that we have in our languages.  When you have a long compound sentences try to split it into more simple sentences and never forget the subject.

I admit, I am a little bit obsessed with the use of the subject in a sentence, due to the fact that in many cases and classes, I some kind of missed its presence, which, for sure, did not make my day.

Improve your business English/Engleza de afaceri

Generally everybody, working in all kinds of environments, has to search for information which can sometimes be available only in English.

Provided that your level of English allows you to do so, how can you improve your business English?

A few tips:

Read international financial newspapers, also you can read Romanian financial newspapers which have an English section. First read the article in Romanian, after that read the article in English, so you can remember some business, banking and economics terms.

There are also many blogs over the internet where trends, economic situations, economic issues and indicators are discussed and commented upon. Some more information is to be found in my business English articles.

To Do or To Make?

This article is also about common mistakes that many students make. Or should I say Do?

The correct phrase is To Make a mistake. The source of wrongly using the verbs To Do and To Make also derives from translating from a language to another and not thinking in the language you try to use. When I advise my students to think in English, they reply that they cannot change their thoughts into English. Nobody asks them to do that, but (as I said in my previous articles) to adapt the sentences you want to make, to the patterns of the English language. Should I say do a sentence? No, the correct phrase is To make a sentence.

The question is what differentiate these two verbs? When do we use To Do and when To Make? First of all, do not forget that To Do is also an auxiliary, but when it is used as an auxiliary, it is devoid of meaning, it just fills the position of an auxiliary that a question or a negation should never miss.

Unfortunately, there are no rules for using To Do and To Make, the only difference is that To Do is more abstract and To Make involves in some contexts the actual action of making or producing something. That is why on all the products we have the phrase ”made in"…or manufactured in…”

In order to use them correctly, try to use them in context. If you are not sure, all the time check the phrase in a dictionary and be careful with phrases like “to do an exercise” but “to make sentences” and “to make a mistake”.

For my advanced students I have a piece of advice, which is trying to make progress by reading, conversing, watching films being subtitled also in English. You will do a good job by doing so.

Economics courses

For this kind of courses I follow a textbook or many textbooks due to the fact that the ones that are on the market are not entirely satisfying. My honest opinion is that the English manuals on economics or macroeconomics are not basically devised for economists but for any kind of students trying to improve their English. I have noticed that they include some concepts which are presented through a definition and not as interrelated with others.

During the first courses I introduce some key concepts such as inflation, unemployment, the interest rate for monetary policy or money in the economy and I try to present them in association and following some economics laws or concepts such as the Phillips Curve.

The theoretical approach is supplemented with practical activities, such as analyzing in a graph the evolution of inflation (or other macroeconomics indicators) and to compare its evolution in Romania with its evolution in the EU states.
