Cand trebuie sa explic ceva ma adresez de obicei mediului/background-ului clientilor..Din fericire majoritatea au un background tehnic, ceea ce faciliteaza anumite asocieri. Cum ar fi, cu referire la subiectul acestui articol, asocirea cu ideea de multime (de la matematica, nu crowd). Deci avem o multime de concepte, idei, obiecte, care in multimea respectiva sunt determinate de articolul nehotarat A/An..Daca extrag un concept, obiect din multime, determinantul lui va fi articolul hotarat.


Ex: There is a man, a car, a tree in the street. The car is a Porsche.

Desigur, mai sunt si alte reguli..Dar aceasta asociere este cea mai simpla.

Halloween

Halloween is upon us :).

The origins of the celebration date back hundreds of years ago to the Druid festival of Samhain, Lord of the Dead and Prince of Darkness, who, according to Celtic belief, gathered up the souls of all those who died during the year to present them to Druid Heaven on October 31st.
The Druid New Year began on November 1st, marking the beginning of winter and the reign of the Lord of Death. The Druids called upon supernatural forces to placate the evil spirits, and it is from that tradition that modern Halloween gets the paraphernalia of ghosts, goblins, witches, skeletons, cats, masks and bonfires.
As Christianity replaced the pagan religions, the church set aside November 1^st to honor all saints (all-hallows) and called it All Hallows’ Day. The evening before November 1^st became All Hallows’ Even, later shortened to Halloween.

The jack-o-lantern, most typical of Halloween symbols began with the Irish. According to legend, a man named Jack, who was kept out of Heaven because he was stingy and expelled from Hell for playing tricks on the Devil, was condemned to walk the earth forever carrying a lantern to light his way. In Ireland the jack-o-lanterns were made by hollowing out large potatoes or turnips. During the 1840s, the Irish took their ways and celebrations to the States and pumpkins started being used instead of turnips, due to practical reasons. A candle burning inside makes the merry face of the “Trick or Treat goer” visible from far away on a dark night and the pulp makes delicious pumpkin pie.

The lantern was also used to frighten away roaming spirits by those who walked out into the night. Another meaning is that in the darkness, light continues hidden in the tubers, seeds, dormant under the earth but still glowing, like the candle in the pumpkin.

For the Celts, Samhaim was also the start of the story-telling season by candlelight.

Most times all Christian celebrations retain a little from a heathen past, because in the old times the transition toward Christianity had been swifter on condition the well known patterns of pagan ways were preserved.

Engleza de afaceri/ English for interviews

Earlier these days an add has caught my attention. It is an advertisement for a course during which students can improve their skills in writing their own CVs in the English language and through this, to improve their chances of getting the job.

I think that the CV is very important, of course, but you have to also perform well at the interview to get the job. My opinion is that the most important is the interview. When writing your CV, pay attention to all details, especially to the ones referring and giving accurate details about your previous experience, tasks and achievements. Also do not forget to mention your skills and I mean not only your professional ones.

What about the interview? Take your time and prepare thoroughly for it. First, think of some possible questions that the interviewer can ask you. Some of these questions can be standard, some can be puzzling for you. Try and be prepared for everything. Also think of some questions for you to ask the interviewer. Then you should do some research on the company you are having the interview at. Try to find as many details as you can, details concerning the turnover, the evolution of profit; mention if there has been an increase in the profit lately, as compared with the same period of time, last quarter or last year. Also find information about the company’s market share, about its main competitors and familiarize yourself with the products of the company. If the company is a joint stock (S.A.), find information on its evolution on the Stock Market. These data are available in financial newspapers, on the BVB site or others. If you are applying for a job in a limited liability company (S.R.L.), just concentrate on the products, and why not, on the ones of the competitors. Having good insight into these matters will hopefully score you some good points at the interview.

Taking into account the fact that we receive many requests for legal English courses, I would like to enlarge upon the methodology of these courses. 

During the first legal English classes, new vocabulary is being introduced. These concepts pertain to the legal system, such as: the bodies of law (civil law, common law, criminal law), types of laws, types of courts, persons in court (defendant, clerk, claimant/plaintiff, advocate….), documents in court (affidavit, brief, complaint, motion…).

The new vocabulary is introduced in context and in communicative and interactive activities. I have mentioned in a previous article that the focus of the legal English courses is the new vocabulary which is first brainstormed and then practiced.

Engleza pentru incepatori

In acest articol as vrea sa raspund multor intrebari pe care le primesc in legatura cu desfasurarea cursurilor de engleza pentru incepatori.
 

Inscrierea la aceste cursuri nu este conditionata de sustinerea unui test de nivel, deoarece se presupune ca participantii la acest curs nu detin nici un fel de cunostinte de limba engleza.

La primele cursuri se introduc notiuni simple de exemplu, auxiliarul To Be care este introdus in intrebari simple la care cursantii pot raspunde folosind acelasi verb (To Be). (Cursantii formuleaza si raspund la intrebari cum ar fi: “Where are you from?”, “I am from Romania.”)

De asemenea se studiaza si alfabetul limbii engleze care se citeste, se pronunta corect apoi se foloseste in dialoguri simple.

Toate elementele noi de gramatica si vocabular se introduc in dialoguri si apoi se folosesc in context iar procesul de invatare nu este bazat pe memorarea noilor concepte, ci pe utilizarea lor in intrebari si propozitii simple. De asemenea, cursantii vor primi teme personalizate la aproape fiecare curs.

Cursurile noastre se structureaza pe comunicare si sunt dedicate adultilor care, spre deosebire de copii, asimileaza notiunile noi in mod creativ si nu imitativ.

The FCE exam

I have been very busy lately trying to help my students get the highest scores for the international certificates CAE, FCE and IELTS at the exams being held this weekend and the last.

I would like to share some tips with the contestants with a view to the issues that students find the most difficult.

The outline of the FCE exam is the following:

• Reading: 1 hour
• Writing: 1 hour 20 minutes
• Use of English: 45 minutes
• Listening: 40 minutes (aprox.)
• Speaking: 14 minutes (aprox.)

-The most important thing that ensures the success is attention, so, all the time, read the questions carefully and underline keywords.

-For the FCE Speaking test Part 2, the students are supposed to speak about pictures which are rather unappealing. You should try to “squeeze’’ them of all useful information. It is advisable to build your speech around some vocabulary items that you can choose, based upon the pictures.

-Never forget to compare two of the pictures while answering the question(s).

-Pay attention to your partner’s pictures, because you will be asked a question based upon them.

Speaking a language in 3 months?

This post is not necessarily English related but about the ability of quickly acquiring a new language.

As I mentioned before, in my professional life I always get asked questions like these: “How soon will I be able to speak English?”, “When can I sustain a fluent conversation?”


I have found an interesting article here about the blog of a multilingual bloke who claims he can speak a new language in three months, provided he spends this time in that particular country.


I guess he is right, but spending the time and trying to socialize and to use the language as much as one can are the necessary conditions. I might add a new condition: not having a language of communication can improve the process. Using the new language in all real-life situations and associating concepts and situations with the new vocabulary would be very helpful in the long run.

That is why I appeal to my students not to use another language of communication in class (except for English, of course).


Nevertheless, I cannot compare the two situations; if somebody lives or works in a foreign country for 3 months, he is in constant contact with the language. But if one studies a language 3 or 4 hours a week (+ the additional time spent for homework), his contact with the language is obviously limited.


The questions which remains is: “What happens after you leave that country?” or “How much can you preserve from the knowledge acquired if you stop using that language?

Tips for the Cambridge FCE exam

Presently I will offer some information about the Reading paper for the First Certificate in English exam. In my article Sample Test for the FCE Exam I have introduced tasks for the Use of English test, the Writing test and the Speaking test.

For completing the Reading Paper the time frame is an hour. The task consists of three parts.

The Reading Paper part 1 consists of a multiple choice test. So, there will be a rather long text, which you will have to read carefully and try to circle the right choice. Technically speaking this is an easier task compared with the Listening and (maybe) the Speaking papers, but you need a lot of attention for details. Many students make mistakes about this because they do not mind the details.

Firstly read the questions (they are usually 8). Frequently the gist of the task is in the question. And this applies to all tasks. You cannot do right if you do not know/understand what you are supposed to do. It is very simple in theory, but in practice students sometimes do not really pay attention and lose valuable points.

Read also the alternatives and if you decide to circle something, find reasons in the text to do so. And this is the difficult part about this text because the alternatives are often confusing and you might think that more than one is appropriate. Students seldom find two alternatives that can match the context. How to choose between them?

Scan the fragment which the task is about and find tips in the text in favor of your choice. Chose the alternative for which there are more reasons.


I couldn’t help but noticing another type of mistake; imaginative students circle the wrong answer because they think it is a possible continuation of the fragment/text. So, do not forget, you circle something because of hard evidence in the text and not because you feel it might be correct.

As a conclusion, I need to remind you to pay attention to the time for this paper: you must complete all 3 parts of the Reading Paper in an hour, so time management is of utmost importance!
